Quick file checklist

Four things to check before printing

A few simple checks can prevent delays and help the finished job look its best.

Save a PDF

A PDF usually preserves the page layout, fonts and images more reliably than an editable document.

Allow for trimming

Anything intended to print to the edge should extend beyond the trim. Keep important text safely inside the edge.

Check image quality

Images taken from websites or screenshots can appear soft when enlarged. Supply the clearest originals available.

Confirm the job

Include the finished size, page count, quantity, colour requirements, finishing and required completion date.

Frequently asked questions

Common printing questions

Which file types can I send?

PDF is preferred, but Hotprint can also work with common Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPEG and TIFF files. Editable files may need checking before production.

Can you check or correct my file?

Yes. The team can identify common issues and discuss minor setup work. More involved design or reconstruction can be quoted before work begins.

What is bleed?

Bleed is artwork extending beyond the final trim edge. It prevents an unwanted white line when a background colour or image is meant to reach the edge.

Will printed colour match my screen exactly?

Screens produce colour with light, while printers use ink or toner, so some variation is normal. Ask about a proof when colour matching is particularly important.

Can my job be completed today?

Many digital jobs can be handled urgently or on the same day. Timing depends on file readiness, quantity and finishing, so call first to confirm.

Can I see a proof before the full run?

A proof may be appropriate for jobs where layout, pagination or colour needs confirmation. The best proofing approach depends on the product and deadline.

How do I send a large file?

Start with the quote or contact form and explain the job. The team can then advise the easiest way to supply files that are too large for ordinary email.

Can you deliver the finished printing?

Yes. Wellington delivery, packaging and courier dispatch can be arranged depending on the job, destination and required timing.

Still unsure? Send the file through.

Hotprint will help identify what is needed before the job goes into production.
